CHAPTER FOURTEEN

SCARLETT

You know that feeling in your body, like somebody is blowing a kazoo into your lungs, and every single inch of you is expectant, waiting, brimming with anticipation?

I used to feel that way before Christmas each year, waiting to see what my parents—or Santa, I guess—would rustle up for me that year.

This feeling, though…

I don’t think I’ve ever felt like this. I could wait for a thousand Christmases and still not reach this level of anticipation. Waiting for Maverick to get to Chicago is like showing up at a buffet with an empty stomach and lead weights tied to each foot. I need to move faster toward my goal, which is Maverick being with me, but all I can do is trudge along and wait.

I head to the mixer without him, because I feel a particular brand of pathetic when my only plan is to wait, perched on Maverick’s bed like an obedient puppy, until he shows up. No, I’m going to have some fun in the meantime. Eat some damn dinner. See if I can’t coax some more of this jealousy out of Maverick, just for funsies.

I text Mav the room number and tell him to find me at the mixer when he gets here. And then I head up—all the way to the rooftop. The show has converted the entire rooftop lounge area into our personal reality TV oasis. Cameramen are stationed throughout the tiled and backlit paradise. Sashimi is laid out next to hand-battered shrimp poppers, and a whole portion of one table is dedicated to different sauces, each with a tiny, hand-written label on a stick in front of it.

And behind it all, Chicago gleams in the golden hour. Breathtaking and dazzling, both land and lake.

Before I’m even three shrimp poppers deep, Davie is at my side.

“How was the drive?” Cologne wafts my way, and he somehow looks more handsome today, more impeccable. But all I can focus on as I look at him is the wild red stubble shooting out of his chin; I wonder if it would hurt if it rubbed against my cheek and realize that I would take any amount of stubble pain if it meant Maverick would finally kiss me and put me out of my misery.

Because at this point, yes, I’m in misery.

I love him so much that I’d do anything for him.

Including forsake my own boundaries regarding our friendship.

“Drive was good.” I send him a breezy smile. “It feels so good to be in Chicago, you know?”

His grin stretches ear-to-ear as he nods. “Yeah. Reeaallly good to be in Chicago.” He takes a sip of whatever he’s drinking, the breeze moving his strange red hairdo. “Where’s your friend?”

“Oh, he’s still on the road. His—I mean, our—the food truck is really slow.”

He nods, his gaze turning serious. “So you never mentioned before. What restaurants has he trained at?”

“Oh, uh, none, actually.” I laugh, fingering the fourth popper I really want to eat but, come on, I’ve already had three and there’s still this whole table of awesome food left.
